Mavic US is back!

by John Satory September 26, 2023

So Mavic recently made an announcement about their return to the US market with the opening of their US headquarters in Waterbury, VT. This makes me happy on many levels. Since pretty much supporting the brand solo since Mavic ceased operations here in 2019, I have had the opportunity to offer support directly to Mavic consumers here in the US and beyond when Mavic customer support was nonexistent. A task that was not for the weak of heart…lol. Almost every email, call, or DM included me saying that I’m not an employee of Mavic; I’m just a dealer wanting to help, and while I wasn’t perfect, I did my best.

Even though Mavic has more history than any other wheel brand, it’s not going to be a walk in the park for them here in the US.  For me, it’s easy to support a brand that has a superior product and a track record to back it up.  Mavic is not without flaws. There isn’t a wheel brand that’s perfect.  I believe that their biggest enemy is the LBS.  The amount of misinformation that comes from bike shops is equally astonishing and frustrating.  Most shops recommend replacement of wheels instead of repairing when parts are available, and there is a lack of initiative to learn how to work on new/different technology.  It’s definitely not all LBSs, but a vast majority.

The market is saturated with wheels that are essentially the same.  Carbon or aluminum rims laced up with Brand X, Y, or Z spokes to some generic hub with generic bearings.  Yes, I know that there are exceptions.  Mavic produces legit hubs, spokes, and rims.  A system.  Who else does that at scale?  Isn’t it about time that we stop categorizing the term “proprietary” as a pejorative?  This, and Mavic’s commitment to making a great product (I’m talking wheels and rims specifically), makes it easy for me to support.  When asked, I say that I’m generally brand agnostic, but I do support brands that make a really good product and that make changes to improve, not just to change.

So, I welcome Mavic back to the US, and I sincerely wish them the best.  My plan is to continue to support Mavic wheel owners and bike shops here in the US and beyond.  I foresee being able to keep current replacement parts in stock while being able to place special orders from Mavic for parts that I don’t usually stock.  Thank you for your support and your kind words.  I am grateful and humbled to be able to keep you rolling on your Mavic wheels!  -John
